THE QUIET CHAMPION

Golden - art by Luro

your trophies made of gold
belong to someone else
couldn't get a taste champagne
like the others
nobody celebrates your achievements
"outstanding, outgoing, best of the best"
blah blah blah
you know you deserve it
(everybody knows but won't admit)
your accolades, the crowd's cheer
it means the world to you
to walk on stage, wear medals
hold heavy golden shields
now stolen by someone else
the camera's flash blinds you
but you sit there in silence
your head among other heads
just a part of the audience
folded arms before an applause
trying to conceal the embarrassment
as you glance at the floor and ceiling
from time to time
the winners are announced
they look at you
but you're not on stage
confetti falls like snow
on all the entitled ones
who stole your show,
your one and only chance
in the spotlight
and you're the one who goes unrecognized
because they don't see your worth.
while the insecure others are busy
seeking attention by posting pictures
of their awards,
you congratulate them. You're so humble!
the roles should've been reversed
no ego or megalomaniac instincts
in their heart of hearts, they know
that you're a winner
somehow, bigots who favour the others
and do not take the time
to think about your efforts
your time, your sincerity
your dedication, your honesty
they keep winning because you let them win
you never protest despite knowing
that their success is because of you
it's just so convenient for some
to steal your limelight
when you see the others around, you smile
and wish the best for them
but all they do is take delight
because you didn't win, they did.
it's their day, not yours
they say pride has a fall
surprisingly, their pride doesn't
and just because you didn't win
in front of the universe, doesn't mean
you're less of a champion.
so what if the paparazzi
doesn't follow you?
so what if you're not the toast of the town?
so what if people don't praise you?
so what if they don't see you like some do?
so what if they roll their eyes
at your ambition ?
so what if they laugh at you
for not winning?
so what if you don't
have a superiority complex?
so what if you're unnoticed?
so what if you're silent
when you should be angry?
so what if you're not a Nobel Laureate?
you're still a champion
who wears generosity like an outfit.
